Classic Goa Tunes For A Rainy Day

Running in the rain while listening to Goa classics... Somehow, rare are the natural things that make me feel the same rush i felt today...
This music is way beyond my understanding. Today i felt like it is strumming the strings of my soul. It is hard to sit down and write how i felt so i'm not gonna try too hard.
Here are 3 tracks that made my running session today unforgettable:

VA - Fashion

Genre: Progressive Trance
Released: September 2010
Label: Blue Tunes Records

1. Haldolium - Salt (Remake 2010) (8:03)
2. Ski Fi - Evolution (6:41)
3. Symphonix - Everything You Want (7:22)
5. Suntree - Carrying The World (10:50)
7. Tom Hill, Jochem Peterson - Wild Silence (Neelix Remix) (7:27)
10. Lish - Running Away (8:49)

Fashion is the newest compilation from Blue tunes records. One of the leading labels in the progressive sound scene.
The truth should be told, a lot of progressive tunes come out lately, and everything sounds the same. Repetitive and not innovating. Fashion is special in my opinion because it leaves a good taste. It has a great mix of artists and different styles, and is very unique. Definitely a compilation worth having!

The album starts off with a remake of an old Haldolium track from 2004. A great opener, solid but yet gentle!
Next is a track by Ski-Fi, I love the baseline in here. We are getting higher.. A great construction to this track, massive!
3rd track of this album is by the great duo Symphonix. I always love to hear new music from these guys and i never get disappointed. Great progressive track with a spacey touch. Not to miss...
We are getting closer to the middle of the compilation and it is time for the first bomb. The edit for Age of History by Phase is an example of how a remix should be done. The result here is a great progressive track with techno influences and a pinch of psychedelic. One of the highlights of this album.
Next we have a track by Suntree, a talented artist from Israel, known for his massive baselines. No surprises here, fat bass, dreamy pads and a nice vocal on top of it all.
Already half pass the album and here comes another awesome track. Ritmo is similar in style to Suntree, and so it is a perfect spot on the album for this track. This remix for Human Beings is a top-notch production and is a dance-floor killer!! Watch out from this one...
The 7th track in this album is where the BPM drops down, and we are introduced to more technoish sound. Neelix remix to Tom Hill & Jochem Peterson gives us a very funky and disco oriented track. Happy happy joy joy.
Next we have this BOMB from Xibalba called The Path. Motherfucking Big Fat Bass... it's all i have to say about this one... :)
Moving on and one track before the closer we encounter the track Try Me. The most beautiful piece in this album. The development in this track is perfect. Slowly but surly... and when you reach the 6st minute of this track it all make sense... just beautiful..
The last but not least is a track by the great Israeli duo Lish. This track takes us down down to the minimal sound. Good atmosphere and like the name of this track (Running Away) it is perfect for running. Try it !

Fashion is by far one of the better compilations that came out this year. It is colorful, rich and most important, psychedelic.. Highly recommended!!

The Black Keys - Tighten Up (Video)

Tighten Up is the first single to come out from The Black Keys sixth album, Brothers.
Produced by Danger Mouse, this is a great Garage-Rock piece with a touch of Blues.
The song talks about love, (how surprising..) but it is groovy and the lyrics are not cheesy, so it's a winner !
The video clip made for this clip can be described with a simple expression. Like Father, Like Son.
The video can also imply how the passion for love is within us from the very beginning and it doesn't really change that much...

Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse - Revenge (Lyrics)

Pain
I guess it's a matter of sensation
But somehow you have a way of avoiding it all
In my mind
I have shot you and stabbed you through your heart
I just didn't understand
The ricochet is the second part

'Cause you can't hide what you intend
It glows in the dark
Once you've sought
The path of revenge
There's no way to stop
And the more I try to hurt you
The more it hurts me

Strange
It seems like a character mutation
Though I have all the means of bringing you fuckers down
I can't make myself
To destroy upon command
Somehow forgiveness lets the evil make the laws

No you can't hide what you intend
It glows in the dark
Once we've become the thing we dread
There's no way to stop
And the more I try to hurt you
The more it backfires

The more that it backfires
The more that it backfires
------------------------------------------------------------

Revenge is the first song in the project called Dark Night Of The Soul, by Danger Mouse , Sparklehorse and David Lynch.
The melancholy vocals in the song belongs to Wayne Coyne, The Flaming Lips' lead vocalist.
The sad side of the story is the recent suicide of Mark Linkous, known as Sparklehorse.
Linkous who has suffered from depression wrote this album together with Danger Mouse in 2009. The same year the album was supposed to release but due to legal dispute with EMI, the album only came out this summer. 4 month after Linkous killed himself.

Having that in mind, the meaning of the lyrics here gets a whole new dimension to me.
The straightforward approach will lead us to think that the song is about a guy that losses his girlfriend to someone else, and he wants to hurt her in revenge. But the more he tries, he understand that it's hard to hurt someone you still care for, and he himself gets hurt.
The second way for me to look at this is from Mark Linkous' eyes. The story here is actually about the battle he had against the world, or the people in the world. He felt pain and he wanted to strike back, but he couldn't. He let the evil win and hurt himself instead.

I can't get this song out of my head lately, it makes me shiver. The best lines in this song for me are: "No you can't hide what you intend// It glows in the dark" I think this is so true. Not just relating to the song but in general. In the night time the realness comes out, the masks are off. Our intentions are clear, for good and for bad.
Here is the song for you to listen and judge:

R.I.P

Loud - You Are Everything

Jiddu Krishnamurti was an Indian philosopher known for being one of the greatest spiritual leaders of our times. Jiddu believed in the need for what he called a "transformation of the mind". He argued that in order to make our world a better place to be, the change must occur in us as individuals. By changing the way we think, our perception. The following speech can help you understand his ideas.

You can listen to it here:
"What we are trying in all these discussions and talks here, is to see if we cannot radically bring about a transformation of the mind. *Not accept things as they are* - but to understand it, to go into it, examine it, give your heart and your mind with every thing that you have to find out. A way of living differently. But that depends on you and not somebody else. Because in this there is no teacher, no pupil. There's no leader, there is no guru, there's no master, no savior. You yourself are the teacher, and the pupil, you're the master, you're the guru, you are the leader, you are everything! And, to understand is to transform what is."
-------------------------------------------
Loud, an Israeli electronic duo, used this speech in one of their tracks in an excellent way.
The resulting track is one of the most powerful tracks i know. Massive bass, psychedelic atmosphere and full of emotion.

Here it is, You Are Everything, from Loud's 3rd album. Free From Conceptual Thoughts:

!The change begins in you and me!

Super Taranta!
is Gogogl Bordello's fourth album who came out 3 years ago.
I wouldn't say that this is their best album but if you are new to the band then it's the best to start with. The album highlights everything that is so fucking good about GB. Don't be turned-off by the heavy Russian accent. It is all part of the show.
Gogol Bordello was Formed in the Lower East Side in NYC in 1999. Members of the band are coming from more than 10 different countries! including Ukraine, Israel, Ecuador, Romania and Ethiopia. The band is also known for using interesting live instruments such as violin, accordion, saxophone, cymbals and other percussions. Those are some of the reasons for the unique sound of this band. GB is something else in the market. At start you may think it's too crazy. But if you will give it a chance, you will fall in love with the rich sound and the witty lyrics.
And once you'll see the band preform a live show, there is no way back! The most energetic show you'll ever go to. Guaranteed!

Back to the album. Super Taranta! features 14 songs including some of the best ever came out from this band. The very first lines in this album summarize it all... "If we are here not to do, what you and i want to do, and go forever crazy with it, why the hell we are even here?!"
Second song in the album is one of the greatest songs of all times, Wonderlust king. The seek for knowledge and inspiration all over the world. The great video is here for you to enjoy:

Later in the album we can listen to the supertheory of supereverything and understand why there is a rumor that the lord has no sense of humor. Find out why American weddings sucks and hear a rare ballad for out beloved friend, Alcohol.
In the 7th track of this album, Eugene Hütz, the band's front man, sings about his strange uncles from abroad. In an interview he once said that when he was younger in Ukraine, he was exposed to art from the west and he always felt that all of these artist are like his uncles that he just never met before.
As mentioned above, GB's live shows are amazing, the vibes in the air are hard to explain in words. To give you a taste of it here is a video of the band performs the first song from this album, Ultimate:

Super Taranta! is a work of art and is extra recommended for anyone who loves good music and has an open mind. Give it a try!

brothers of the tribal connection, let's turn frustration into inspiration!!!

Yeasayer - Madder Red (Video)

Madder Red is the 3rd single from the new album by Yeasayer, Odd Blood.
This video who came out recently is bizarre but yet suits the message of the song perfectly.
Some say that the video is inspired by a story about a shepherd who had a deformed sheep in his flock. Others say it is just a metaphor of someone who is becoming the ugly shadow of his significant other.
Expect a beautiful girl and a one-eyed nasty creature, in one of the weirdest videos you'll seen.
Directed by Andreas Nilsson and featuring Kristen Bell.

Sublime - Santeria (Lyrics)

I don't practice Santeria
I ain't got no crystal ball
Well I had a million dollars but I, I'd spend it all
If I could find that heina and that Sancho that she'd found
Well I'd pop a cap in sancho and I'd slap her down

What I really wanna know (my baby)
What I really wanna say, I can't define
Well it's love that I neeeeeed
My soul will have to

Wait till I get back
Find a heina of my own
Daddy's gonna love one and all
I feel the break, feel the break, feel the break
And I gotta live it out
Oh yeah un-huh
Well I swear that I

What I really wanna know (my baby)
What I really wanna say, I can't define
Got love! Make it go
My soul will have to...

What I really wanna say (my baby)
What I really wanna say, is I've got mine
And I'll make it
Yes, I'm going up

Tell Sanchito that if he knows what is good for him
He best go run and hide
Daddy's got a new .45
And I won't think twice
To stick that barrel straight down sancho's throat
Believe me when I say that I got something for his punk-ass

What I really wanna know (my baby)
What I really wanna say, is there's just one way back
And I'll make it
My soul will have to wait

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Santeria is one of my favorite songs of all time and probably Sublime's most popular song.
It was released in 1996, short after Bradley Nowell, the band's lead singer, song writer and guitarist, died from an overdose of heroin in the age of 28.
When listening to the song and following the lyrics, it seems like the song was written about a guy that his girlfriend is cheating on him. The guy says he is not doing any black magic (santeria, crystal ball) so he could not see this coming. Heina means one's girlfriend in Spanish and Sancho is known in Mexico as the guy that your woman is cheating with. Lines like "I'd pop a cap in sancho and I'd slap her down" and "Daddy's got a new .45. And I won't think twice To stick that barrel straight down sancho's throat" Indicate the guy's will for revenge.
It seems like a straightforward lyrics, but is that so?
When listening to Brad's voice in this song, you can feel the emotions behind the mic. There must be more to this song than what is clear to the eye (or ear)...

There is another interpretation to this song. One that i strongly agree with.
This whole song is a metaphor. Heina is actually Bradley's soul that met Sancho=Heroin, and Baby is Bradley's son. Bradley who was addicted to heroin, wrote this song for his son. "What I really wanna know (my baby) What I really wanna say, I can't define" And he is saying he needs his son's loving in order for him to quit heroin. "Well it's love that I neeeeeed" He knows that he needs to fight his addiction and find his way back, so he can be there for his son. I think that the last paragraph summarize it all: "What I really wanna say, is there's just one way back And I'll make it My soul will have to wait"

I do think that this is the true meaning behind the lyrics, which makes this song so powerful!!
Too bad that even though he knew Heroin is going to kill him, he could not escape.

You can watch a video of this song with the lyrics:

Dusty Kid - America (Video)

There is something about the word America. Or even America itself. The land of opportunities.
You do get that feeling sometimes when you travel in the United States. Endless possibilities surrounds you. And Words could not describe that excitement.
When listening to America by Dusty Kid this feeling wraps it arms around me. I don't know if that's what Dusty Kid meant when he named his track, but this is definitely one of the best electronic pieces ever made.
Full of emotion yet so powerful! Here it is, ~14 minutes of pure pleasure...

8. TV On The Radio - Love Dog (5:36)
11. TV On The Radio - Lover's Day (5:54)

The first time I've listened to TV On The Radio was actually in a concert.
It was the middle of the summer in NYC and not surprisingly it was raining.
The concert took place at the Summerstage in Central Park.
A lot of people showed up to the concert equipped with umbrellas and panchos.
Along the scent of ganja in the air i will never forget the energy of the band while they were playing their music under the pouring rain.
The band played mostly songs from their recent album Dear Science.
The Album contains 11 wonderful pieces. All of high quality production. The Perfect combination of live instruments and electronic tools.
The vocals by Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone are truly unique and are a big part of this album major success.
I can honestly say that there isn't even a single song i skip when listening to this album.
This is their best creation In my opinion. Indie rock music at its best.
So whenever you are heading to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, be sure to give a listen to
Dear Science
to get into the right vibe...

Favorite Songs: Tough call here since they are all awesome!
Shout Me Out is a neat and funny song with an interesting lyrics. Family Tree is a rare ballad. and the best one for me is DLZ which is just brilliant.

Hot Chip - I Feel Better (Video)

Hot chip has been active in the music scene for over a decade now.
Their last studio album One Life Stand was released in the beginning of this year, and received a lot of good reviews.
Probably the most familiar and (over)played song from this album is I Feel Better.
Not to miss is the video clip for this song. A parody on boy-bands.
Directed by Peter Serafinowicz with the guest appearance of Ross Lee. This is one of the funniest videos I've seen lately.

Symphonix - The Wild Life

Genre: Progressive Trance
Date: November 2008
Label: Blue Tunes Recordings
1. Symphonix - Trip Away (7:54)
2. Symphonix - System Float (7:13)
3. Symphonix - Smoking Ace (8:08)
4. Symphonix - Floating Mirror (7:10)
5. Symphonix - Freq Box (7:11)
6. Symphonix - Freaking Out (8:03)
9. Symphonix - Resting Voltage (9:21)
10. Symphonix - Miles To Go (7:22)

A new album for the German-duo is a great opportunity to get in my running gear, armed with my iPod, and go for a nice run accompanied by a light rain and a breeze.
Symphonix are one of the leading acts in the trance scene, after playing to endless number of dancefloors.
This album comes out 2 years after the last remix albums, and the expectations are high!

The album opens with the Trip Away. An average Progressive trance track. But at least my worries are gone. They still make Progressive trance :-)
System Float is the next track, and is defiantly one of my favorites in this album. Hypnotic with building energy. Psychedelic at its best !!
Next 4 tracks are Smoking Ace, Floating Mirror, Freq Box, Freaking Out
They all sounds pretty much the same to me. Groovy progressive baselines, some highlights but mostly repetitive sound from old tracks.
The general feeling at this point is that the album is stuck, and not going anywhere....
But then comes The Good old Times the 7th piece in this album is the point where the smile takes over. A great title for this track that feels like a journey from the past with the exact touch of present sound. probably the best track in this album!
Home Sweet Home is another masterpiece. Massive dancefloor tune.
Resting Voltage is a very interesting track. Solid build with an electrical atmosphere. Every time i listen to this track I'm surprised how good it is.
The last track on this Album is Miles to Go which has a more electro feel to it but has the exact amount of psycedelica needed.

To conclude, this is a great album by Symphonix. Some of the tracks are more average but the good tracks in this album are top notch !!

Favorite Tracks: 2,7,8,9

Play this album in a loop, and everytime will sound better.

Favorite Tracks: The great opener by FM Radio Gods. As electro as it gets !
Awesome track by True Lies, a lot of groovy elements and a very nice building here.
Also the 6th track by Brisker And Magitman is a dancefloor bomb.
